Five Dairy Ventilation Tips for Healthy and High-Producing Cows

Ventilation is Needed Year-Round: 

Ventilation isn't just a concern during the hot summer months; it's essential year-round. Proper air exchange helps remove moisture, odors, and harmful gases such as ammonia, which can accumulate in the barn and compromise cow health. Cool Your Cows, Not Your Barn: 

While it's crucial to maintain comfortable temperatures within the barn itself, the primary focus should be on keeping the cows cool and comfortable at all time. Directing fast moving air specifically towards the animals, rather than simply cooling the entire barn space, is more efficient and cost-effective. Utilize louvered circulation fans strategically to create airflow patterns of high-speed air that target the resting area and feed lane (the areas where cows spend the most time). 

Ventilating the Holding Pen is Critical: 

The holding pen is hottest location for cows on your farm.  Proper ventilation in this area is critical for preventing heat stress and maintaining cow comfort. Ensure adequate air movement and consider installing high-speed fans and cooling systems to keep cows cool and minimize stress levels while they await milking. 

Combine a Proper Ventilation Strategy with the Right Genetics: 

While ventilation plays a significant role in cow comfort and health, genetics also play a crucial role in determining a cow's ability to thrive in various environmental conditions.
